Once again we use insecticidal powder and inject this into the void. The powder will penetrate the void finding its way into the nest and here it will kill all the wasps along with the Queen wasp. Those workers that are out hunting for insects will return to the nest and come into contact with the residue powder and this will kill them off over a period of 4 to 6 hours.
Wasp traps and lures
We also offer lures that you can place outside of your property which entice the worker wasps away from your outside areas like patios; these are hanging traps that physically catch the wasp. One advantage of these lures is that they are selective; only attracting wasps and not honeybees. These traps ate 100% pesticide and toxin free as well as being totally maintenance free – no cleaning and no emptying; simple hang up the trap up, the wasps get drawn in and at the end of the summer just throw away the trap.

We have a wasp nest in our loft, do they hibernate?
The Queen wasp is the only wasp to survive into the winter, she will find herself somewhere dry and become dormant emerging in the spring. The Queens will emerge around March or April and begin the process of building a brand new nest; they will not re-use an old nest.
How many wasps will you get in one nest?
The answer to that varies between the different species and for the Common wasp or the German wasp which have the largest colonies this can range into several thousand. Generally its hundreds topping out in the low thousand; hornets will have smaller size colonies although they will pack a greater punch so avoid getting near one of these.

Where do wasps and hornets build their nests?
The answer to that is anywhere; certain species like the Saxon wasp will build a nest in a bush and these are often quite low hanging. They build a small (think pineapple size) nest which is grey and quite difficult to see in the shade of the bush, we find that a lot of these nests get disturbed by gardener’s hedge trimming. Other wasps will build in cavity walls, in lofts and even excavate a nest in the ground and its not uncommon to make a painful discovery when mowing the lawn. A new species to arrive in the very South East of the country is the paper wasp and these build without the iconic outer sheath – they only build a honeycomb.

How do we know if we have wasps?
Wasps are insectivores and so will fly about searching for insects, a wasp hunting will have a lazy flight pattern, meandering about and you will be able to recognise that its searching. When you have a nest nearby you can see a definite flight path – wasps will track in and out; look at dense hedges before beginning any work to see if you spot this activity – there’s a nest inside so be careful.
